SUGARCREEK TOWNSHIP

Venango County Map 1903

Sugarcreek twp. was established October 6, 1800 and included present day townships west of Oil Creek and north of French Creek and the Allegheny River to the Crawford Co. line. The population in 1850 was eight hundred and seventy-five; in 1870, one thousand, six hundred and fifty-six; and in 1880, one thousand, nine hundred and twenty-three.
  • Reno - Situated on the north bank of the Allegheny River mid-way between Franklin and Oil City, this village was a station on the NewYork, Pennsylvania and Ohio, and Lake Shore and Michigan Southern railroads. Hugh Clifford, a soldier of the War of 1812, was among the first settlers in this area. Joel Sage, Robert Alcorn, Andrew Howe, Hugh Clifford and Joseph Shaffer were residents in the area of Reno. In the early 1900s there were several stores, two refineries and a population of approximately 200.

  • Galloway - Derives its name from the owner of the farm upon which it was built. During the first development of the heavy oil district, this village was quite populated.

  • Sugar Creek - Located in the western part of the township, the county poor house was situated in the immediate vicinity of this village.

OLD PIONEER CEMETERY, FRANKLIN, VENANGO
This cemetery is located at the corner of Otter Street and 15th Street on the bank of French creek. The earliest burial was in 1796. In 1876 the Franklin Cemetery grounds were ready and some of the early pioneers were removed to this new site. This following list is not a complete listing of Old Pioneer Cemetery, as several headstones were broken off or destroyed many years ago. Among the graves is that of an old soldier of Napoleon's Army, a few veterans of the Revolutionary War, two veterans of the Civil War, and nine veterans of the War of 1812. In the 1950s many members of the DAR assisted in the restoration of this cemetery. The following is a list of surnames of people interred in the Old Pioneer Cemetery.
