CANAL TOWNSHIP

Canal Twp. was created from Sugar Creek Twp. Nov. 28, 1833 and namedCanal from the old French Creek canal which is on the southern borderparallel to French Creek. First settlements to this area (Sugar CreekTwp. and part of Allegheny Twp.) were made in 1796 by the Johnstonfamily who came from Huntingdon Co., PA. Samuel Ray, Christopher Sutley,John Hastings, John Hood, Royal Brown and Jacob Lupher were among thepioneers prior to 1820. John Foster and John Wilson were the firstJustices of the Peace that were elected by ballot. John Wilson had beenappointed to that office by the Governor, and served in that capacityfor a number of years previous to his election.

Sarah died in 1851 and he married in 1862 to Mary P. VINCENE with whom he had 3 sons.

War veteran; from NY state, came to this county in 1813 and settled in Frenchcreek Twp., whence he moved to Sugar Creek, and in 1820 to Canal Twp. where he kept a well known hostelry at Hannaville; m. Early Commercial Establishments

  • "Brown House" aka "Long Porch House" - - hostelry in Hannaville - established by William Brown and later owned by Isaac Hanna and then J. L. Foster. A store operated in the tavern and was owned by L. M. Hanna and Erastus Hart and later owned by L.M. Hanna's brother, W.H.H. Hanna and Mr. McKissick.

  • Abt. 1842 John Lupher began the manufacture of threshing machines and then went on to wagon-making until 1883.

CHURCHES

  • THE FREE WILL BAPTIST CHURCH SOCIETY, was organized October, 1827, by Elder J. H. Lamphier, with 26 members, viz: William and Elizabeth Whitman, Michael and Olive Sutley, Samuel and Eliza Anderson, Henry and Mary Hart, Amos and Mary Ann Brown, Conrad Rice, John Douglas, William Douglas, John and Sarah Hawthorne, Nancy Daily, Phebe Rice, Susan Brown, Lucinda Lupher, Horace and Ann Clough, Samuel and Polly Burson, Betsey Burson, Sarah Deets, and Lewis Burson.

  • The first church building was erected in 1832, one-half mile west of Canal Centre, on the Cochranton Road. It was a plain structure of wood thirty-six feet square and the ceiling ten feet high, sealed with plain matched boards throughout. The entrance was at the side of the building. Elder Wm. Whitman and Samuel Burson, were the principal ones that bore the burden of the erection.
