SCRUBGRASS TOWNSHIP


Venango County Map 1903

The erection of Scrubgrass Twp. took place in 1806 and included about half of the present Clinton Twp. within the boundaries. After Clinton Twp. was erected in 1855, Scrubgrass was reduced to its present boundaries. Many of the early settlers will have association with Irwin, Clinton, Scrubgrass, Mineral & Victory Townships.

    Folks

    First settlers to Scrubgrass: It appears the first settlers resulted from the exploration of James Scott, abt 1793-94, who was a resident of Westmoreland Co. PA. After returning to his home county he spoke highly of the area and encouraged almost a dozen neighbors to accompany him to the new area in 1795.

    From "Exploring Venango County" - Anderson Stone House - in 1814, James ANDERSON purchased four hundred acres for $2,100, the terms of down payment being $300 plus 200 gallons of whiskey and the balance in designated installments. The stucco-covered stone house was built in 1827 by his son who owned a distillery on the farm using the water from a spring beside the house. The fine quality of "Scrubgrass whiskey" was known throughout the area. Location: Take PA 208 east from Clintonville for 2 miles and turn left on T-400. The Anderson house is the first house on the left.

  • Levi WILLIAMS, b. 16 Oct 1781 in Northumberland Co., s/o Benjamin; m.     Early Churches

  • Scrubgrass Presbyterian Church - one of the oldest in the Venango County was probably organized in 1802; aka Stone Church; located 4 miles west of Emlenton near to Crawford's Corners.

  • The M.E. Church in Big Bend was organized by John MIDDLETON and Elisha LAWRENCE in 1835.
