Formed in 1845 from portions of Plum, Oakland, Canal and Sugarcreek Townships.

Borough of COOPERSTOWN - Founded by William Cooper who arrived in this locality from Eastern PA in 1797 and built the first mill on Sugar Creek. He died Feb. 1, 1813 and was buried in the graveyard of the old Methodist Church.

  • Robert BRADLEY - settled in Cooperstown in 1824 and served as a county commissioner and Justice of the Peace; Robert BRADLEY and John FETTERMAN bought the store of William SHAW and sold livestock; brother, John G. BRADLEY resided in Plum Twp. in area of Bradleytown. Robert BRADLEY m. Polly FETTERMAN, daughter of Capt. John Fetterman of Oakland twp.

  • William COOPER - 1747 - 1813, came to Jackson Twp. from an eastern county and settled here in 1797and is the man from whom Cooperstown is so named; m. Rachel __ ; children: Samuel, William, m.   • Miles McALEVY - tailor and farmer; b. 29 Oct 1805 in Huntingdon Co., PA, s/o Gen. William McAlevy; removed to Venango Co. in 1833 where he obtained 100 - acres in the area of Jackson Twp.; m. Elizabeth McCAULAY who was born 16 June 1798; children: William, m. Matilda MATTHEWS; Wesley G., died at age 27; Margaret M., m. John BRADLEY; Mary J., m. William GROVE; Martha A., m.   • Samuel PLUMER - son of Nathaniel PLUMER who had moved to Jackson twp. in 1800 ; then moved to Allegheny Co., PA in 1810; m. Patty ADAMS who resided with her children in Franklin after the death of Samuel.

  • David RAY - blacksmith; b. 28 October 1825, in Crawford Co., PA, s/o Alexander and Lydia ELDERCON Ray ; m. in 1848 to Elizabeth PUSKEY, d/o Storffel Puskey; children: Milton B., m.   • John Edward SWEENY - born in County Kerry, Ireland; immigrated to America abt. 1810; purchased a farm near Cooperstown in 1828; m. in 1821 to Rebecca JENNINGS; donated the property for the Cooperstown Presbyterian Church; five of his nine children are: Juliet, m. Chester PHILLIPS; Jemima; Sarah; Rebecca & Edward, m. Mary F. KIGHTLINGER.

    Early Business Establishments

    • * Joseph HILLIER and his son, Samuel B. HILLIER were engaged in the manufacture of woolen goods in Cooperstown. (add about Rich)

    • *The RICH, BOOTH & HILLIER gentlemen built a grist mill in 1846-47 at Cooperstown.

    • *John McKENZIE established the first hotel in area that was later purchased by John KELLY in 1837. John McKINZIE also built a mill on the Lake Branch of Sugar Creek in 1840.

    • * Mr. ROBINSON built a grist mill at the lower bridge area, about 1 1/2 miles from Cooperstown. David W. S. COOK was a later owner of this mill.

    • * John COOPER owned a hat shop on Sugar Creek in Cooperstown.

    • *James COOPER owned a tannery and later purchased an asherie business.

    • *William COOPER, Jr. had a blacksmith business in the area of Cooperstown.

    • *James and Alexander GORDON operated distilleries near Cooperstown on property later purchased by Dr. Robert CRAWFORD.

    • *James KINGSLEY settled in Cooperstown in March 1827; m. Louisa PATTON from Centerville, Crawford Co., PA and he founded one of the first cloth dressing establishments in the county.

    • * William McINTOSH made a home on Sugar creek north of Cooperstown where he had a grist mill and distillery.

    • * Arnold PLUMER owned the old FETTERMAN grist mill at one time.
