CLINTON TOWNSHIP

Venango County Map 1903

This twp. was organized in 1855 upon petition of citizens of Scrubgrass and Irwin Twsps. In your search for early pioneers, please see the adjoining twsps. - Scrubgrass, Irwin, Mineral & Victory - for more information. Many contributors/researchers are listed at the end of this page whose families were the pioneers in the southern area of Venango Co.

CLINTONVILLE BOROUGH

The first house to be built in this business metropolis of the township was that of John Atwell on the corner of Emlenton and Butler Streets. In 1833 William Cross and James Perry opened a store on the corner of Franklin and Mercer Sts. The residence of James Perry was within this store and was the second house to be built in Clintonville. In 1866 on Franklin Street were the residences of Thomas McKee, Dr. James Foster, A. F. Hollister, Squire John Hovis and John Shaffer.

Early Villages

  • Phipps' Mills - John Anderson built the first furnace in the twp. in 1824 on Big Scrubgrass Creek a mile above Kennerdell. In 1835 he sold the property to David Phipps. There was a small village of twenty or more homes and a large general store. David Phipps was postmaster and it appears that the Phipps and Clapps were associated in the iron business, employing forty operatives and manufactured metal for the Pittsburgh market along with stoves, pots, pans, kettles, etc. to meet the needs of the residents.
  • Kennerdell - In 1853 Richard Kennerdell purchased property from David Phipps and built a large woolen mill and was actively engaged in business until his death.
  • Janestown - named by William Cross in honor of his wife, Jane Weakley. Jane furnace was begun in 1840 and was first put to blast in 1842. After the furnace blew out in 1859, the village soon disappeared.
