RICHLAND TOWNSHIP AND EMLENTON BORO


When established in 1806, the boundaries were far reaching into present day Clarion County. (Clarion Co. was formed in 1839). The Ritchey's Run area was on of the first areas to be settled in this part of Venango Co.

  • William ADAMS- operated a tannery on land that later was the farm of John PERSING.

  • John F. AGNEW - established the first carding mill on Ritchey's Run, 2 miles from its mouth. His location was know as Agnew's Mills where he was postmaster for 50 years.

  • Henry ALLEBACH - in 1840 he located in Emlenton where he had a jewelry business; married Sarah SHANER in 1823 in Berks Co., PA; children: Maria, (m. George TRUBY); Sarah, (m. John SLOAN); Levi; Susan, (m. John C. PORTERFIELD); and Henry H.

  • Stephen ARNOLD - operated a tannery on land that was later the Leslie ADAMS farm.

  • Thomas BAILEY and wife Violet HUNTER arrived in Richland twp. in 1815 coming from Mifflin and Centre Counties in central PA. They settled on a farm that was said to be on the banks of the Allegheny River. Violet HUNTER was b. 3 March 1802 in County Tyrone, Ireland and Thomas BAILEY was born 20 July 1795 in Chester County, PA. Children: Ellen, b. abt. 1825 in Mifflin Co., PA; Jane Ellen, b. 19 Aug 1826,( m. James RITCHEY Jr.) ; John Scott, (m. Beulah G. BLACKWELL); Thomas Jr. , (m. Amanda J. FOWLES); Samuel, b. 1836; James M.,( m. Harriett Jane STOUT); David, b. 10 Feb 1839; William H., b. 1842.

  • John BELL - purchased property from John DONALDSON; Bell's son George later owned the property.

  • Henry BIERY and wife Esther Hetty SLOTTERER Biery arrived in Richland twp. in 1837 from Lehigh Co., PA. It is said that their youngest son, Hon. James S. BIERY, who was born in Venango Co., moved to Lehigh Co. and became a member of congress for the Lehigh-Montgomery district. Children of Henry and Esther: John, (m. Ester Hattie SHANER); Daniel,( m.   • E.J. CRAWFORD - b. 27 May 1845 in Emlenton, son of Alexander and Margaret ANDERSON Crawford; married Alice J. PATTON; children: Horace P.; Harriet E.; Maggie V.; Maud L.; Ida Blanche; Alexander B.; Roland; Birdella, and Colonel E.J.

  • Patrick CRAYTON - owner of the Exchange Hotel in Emlenton in 1872 until it was destroyed by fire in 1879 when he built the St. Cloud Hotel on the same site; married in 1869 to Bridget CASEY of Franklin, PA; children: John M; Margaret E.; Thomas M.; Patrick H.; and Cornelius.

  • Montgomery CRISWELL - farmer, school director and township collector; b. 20 September 1848; son of Robert and Hannah NICKLE Criswell; m. Ellen WEAVER in 1874; children: Pearl E., Blanch P., and Royal G.

  • John Riddle CUBBISON - b. 1 May 1835; son of Alexander and Sarah RITCHEY Cubbison; John married Adeline MIDDLETON of Scrubgrass twp. in 1856; children: Erastus H., publisher and editor of the Emlenton News, (m. Alice PENDLEBURY); Mary, (m. Edward BIRTCIL); Fidelia, (m. Simeon H.   • John DAVIDSON - served as county commissioner; director of the Venango County Agricultural Society and president of the school board of Richland twp.

  • John DONALDSON - son of Andrew Donaldson , came to Richland in 1822; purchased 350 acres in area later known as the college lands.

  • Samuel DONALDSON - farmer; b. 29 July 1825, son of John and Nancy ADAMS Donaldson; m. (1) Sarah E. MYERS in 1850; children: Ermina, James A., Aldine, Emery B., Priscilla, Mary A., Laura B., Samuel P., and Jessie M. Samuel married (2) Mary J. GARDNER, daughter of David Gardner, in 1878 after the death of Sarah E. Myers.

  • A.G. DOWNING - born in 1816 in this twp.; raised live stock; son of James and Ann GILCHRIST DOWNING. A.G. married in 1839 to Leanna WALTERS; children: Walter; James D.; George; Charles; Mary,( m. James CRIBBS).

  • Thomas J. EAKIN - oil producer; b. 19 Dec 1840 in Clinton twp., Venango Co., PA; son of David and Rebecca Eakin; came to Emlenton in 1889; married Mary A. COULTER; children: Mary Alice; Charles P.; Elizabeth May; Sarah A.; Howard J.; David B.; Thomas J. Jr.; Martha; Marshall; Caroline.

  • Thomas K. GARDNER - b. 27 June 1815 in Mifflin Co. and came to Nickleville area in 1831 with parents, George and Catherine KARNES Gardner. Thomas K. m. (1) Betsy JOLLY, (2) Sarah DONALDSON; child: Mary E. (3) Josephine KARNES, daughter of Abram and Mary MAYS Karnes.

  • Tilghman A. GIERING - miller and postmaster at Porterfield; B. 16 Sept 1845; son of Lewis and Louise KNASS Giering. Tilghman married in 1870 to Eva LEVIER, daughter of John LEVIER; children of Tilghman and Eva : (three of whom are) Louie J., Lewis H., and Irene.

  • Alexander GRANT - b. 23 Sept 1824 in Butler Co., PA, son of Alexander and Elizabeth SAY Grant. In 1849 he married Jane JOLLY; children: Erminie,( m. John BASHLINE); Samuel A.; James R.; Thomas B.; Lulu J.,( m. W.M. NICKLE); Nannie, (m. J.W. LONG); William A.; Charley, & Nellie. Alexander served as justice of the peace and school director in Richland twp.

  • Levi GRIMM - sucessor to M.O. Laughner as postmaster for the village of Mariasville.

  • William HAGERTY - b. 29 Sept 1834 in Scrubgrass twp., Venango Co., PA; came to Richland twp. in 1844 and lived near Emlenton with his parents, James S. and Sarah WEBSTER Hagerty; William's occupation was that of carpenter; in 1857 he was engaged in lumbering in Forest Co., and then returned to Richland twp. in 1870; m. Caroline WELLER of Emlenton; children: Carrie M., (m. Christopher MALT); Sarah A.,( m. E.L. GODFREY); Curtin A., (m. Libby CALVERT); Mary E.,( m. Harvey A. ROBERTSON); Harry W.; Maud M.; James S.

  • Samuel JONES - b. in 1820 in Vermont and moved with his parents, Alpheus and Harriet DAVENPORT Jones to this area in 1824. Samuel was a miller and then began work in pottery at Pleasantville, PA. He married Eliza JOLLY in 1847 and they had 5 children, one being Julius M., b. 17 Feb 1874.

  • Benjamin X. JUNKIN - magistrate of Richland twp. before its division; Junkin owned that part of Mariasville that lies in Clarion Co. Mariasville is named in honor of his wife.

  • William KARNS - operated a distillery near the Disler Corners area (see map -Disler Crossing).

  • Judge John KEATING - arrived in Emlenton in 1836 and began merchandising and assisted in the development of the town; built the Keating furnace that ws 7 miles east of Emlenton; married Catharine McCULLOGH; children: Hugh; Henry; Ann Cecilia, (m. N. MACKIN); Lizzie, (m. C.A. McCAFFERTY); Michael; Mary, and John.

  • W.L. KEEFER - built the Good Intent Woolen Mill in 1856; location was called the Keefer Factory area, in the vicinity of Porterfield.

  • John KERR - settled along the river bank near the present site of Emlenton.

  • M.O. LAUGHNER - first postmaster of the village of Mariasville.

  • D.B. LEVIER - b. 10 April 1839 in Richland twp; son of John and Jane MAITLAND Levier; married S.M. GARDNER, a school teacher in Oil City; 5 children (3 listed) Clifford, Herbert and Helen.

  • George W. MAYS - b. 23 April 1819 in Richland twp.; son of Thomas W. and Henrietta MYERS Mays; occupation was that of miller in Rockland and Sandy Creek twps.;George W. married (1) Juliet ELDER of Clarion Co., PA in 1845; children: James P.; Erena, (m. William SMITH); Emily, (m. Thomas DORSEY); Charity A. (m. P. DORSEY); Julia, (m. Albert SMITH). George married (2) Lucinda ASKEY in 1858; children: Henrietta and Cora L. (m. Tracy B.   • Thomas W. MAYS - located in Richland twp on Mill creek in 1817 to build a log gristmill; he later moved to Pine Hill in Rockland twp.; married Henrietta MYERS; children: Polly, (m. __KARNS); Henry; James; Sarah, (m. David SHAW); George W., [ m. [1] Juliet ELDER, [2] Lucinda ASKEY); Nancy, (m. Moses WHITE); Henrietta, (m.   • Johnson McGINNIS - an early pioneer that settled a farm that was later owned by Thomas BAILEY.

  • John MULLIGAN - operated a distillery that was located 1/2 mile above GIERING'S mill and later moved his mill to east of KIEFER'S Factory- Portersville area.

  • Henry MYERS - built several of the first mills in Richland twp; b. 3 Aug 1761 in York Co., PA or MD; son of George and Elizabeth SINGREE Myers, and the grandson of Frederick MYERS (born in Saxony); Henry married, 25 March 1783, Mary Sarah STROBLE, believed to be the daughter of Zachariah and Rebecca Stroble; Henry d. 24 June 1840 and Sarah d. 29 Dec 1835; Henry and Mary Sarah moved to Richland twp., Venango Co. (area now part of Clarion Co.) in 1806 and had the following children: Nancy Ann, b. 4 June 1784, (m.   • Daniel D. NICKLE - born in Centre Co., PA, 15 april 1818, son of William NICKLE and Hannah AULD. Daniel m. Mary A. MYERS in 1845; children: George S; Ellen B.; Jane, (m. John DONALDSON); William M.; O.H.; Solomon M.

  • William NICKLE and wife Hannah AULD were early settlers in Venango Co. (now part of Clarion Co.) ; children: Elizabeth,( m. William B. McDONALD); Andrew; Hannah, (m. Robert CRISWELL); Daniel D., (m. Mary A. MYERS).

  • Cyrus PORTERFIELD - b. 7 August 1833 in Venango Co., PA; son of Joseph and Hannah HALL PORTERFIELD; m. Nancy DAVIDSON, daughter of William Davidson; children: Clinton, Frank, Grant, John, Carrie, Effie and Flora. Cyrus PORTERFIELD served as a constable of Richland twp. and occupation is listed as farmer.

  • W. Martin PORTERFIELD - farmer; b. 21 July 1844 in Venango Co., PA; son of Robert G. and Lucy LYON PORTERFIELD; Robert G. built the first frame house in Richland twp.; W. Martin married Cynthia J. GRANT; children: Ernest R., Blanche, Austin T., Clyde H., Emoy M., and Claire L.

  • James RITCHEY Sr. and family settled near what is now Emlenton about 1796. This area is at the mouth of Ritchey's Run (name derived from this family). James was born 18 May 1781 in Derry twp., Westmoreland Co., PA and died 28 Feb 1865. He married Jane KENNEDY about 1808. Jane was born 1 Jan 1790 and died 10 April 1864. They are buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Salem twp., Clarion Co., PA as that area was originally part of Richland twp., Venango Co. Children of James Sr. and Jane RITCHEY: Hannah, (m.   • Charles and Richard SHIPPEN - built STAPLEY furnace on Mill creek and the furnace was named in honor of a connection of the Shippen family.

  • Jacob SHIREY and wife Sarah GEHRIS were among the early settlers of Richland twp. in the area of Mariasville. Children: Elizabeth,( m. Daniel BIERY); Peter,( m. Helena BIERY); John, (m.   • Samuel STEWART - located on land later known as the KNAUSS farm.

  • Jacob TRUBY - b. 5 June 1807 in Centre Co., PA; married Lucy HOTCHKISS, daughter of Jessie and Agigail THRASHER HOTCHKISS; Jacob and Lucy came to Emlenton in 1834 to superintend the hotel and ferry.

  • James TRUBY - b. 18 July 1856; youngest son of Jacob and Lucy TRUBY; interest was in the oil business; married Mila A. HENNAGE; children: Jessie G., and Etoil.

  • Samuel F. WEETER - farmer; b. 26 March 1833 in Clarion Co., PA; son of Henry and Frances FREY WEETER; Samuel married Susan KNAUS in 1860; children: Frances C., (m. B.M. KRIBBS); Sarah F., (m. John BERIS); John J.; Mary E., (m. R. PIERCE); William H.; Laura B.; Harvey F. , and Lizzie M.

  • John Adam WELLER - oil producer and farmer; b. 10 Jan 1853 in Emlenton; son of Joseph and Angeline WELLER; m. in 1873 to Mary E. KERR, daughter of William and Catherine BILLLINGSLEY KERR; children of John Adam and Mary: William J., Wallace W., Harry E., and Nellie G.

  • Joseph WELLER - arrived in Emlenton in 1837; involved in merchandising, operation of a stone distillery and farming; married (1) Katie HOOVER and (2) Angeline WILL; Joseph had a total of 15 children from his two marriages.

  • Elizas WIDLE - oil producer, b. 25 Sept 1809 in Lebanon Co., PA; son of George and Sarah LASHER WIDLE; Elias lived in Mariasville and Emlenton; married Louisa M. BURTS in 1838 (prior to moving to Venango Co.) ; children: William E., a baker in Emlenton; Henry Jerome; Eugene E., contractor and driller in Emlenton; John W., flour mill engineer; Benjamin J.; George W.; Mary Louisa; Loren Burt, miller; and Emanuel O.

Early Churches

  • Valley Church of the Evangelical Association - organized in 1834-35 at the Weaver school house by Rev. Solomon ALTAMOUSE. Early members were Joseph and Sallie WEAVER, Andrew and Catherine WEAVER, Thomas WEAVER, Samuel WEAVER, the STARR family, the BUSHEY family, and the MITCHELL family.
  • Academia Presybterian Church / Richland Church - organized in 1823 with the following membership: Samuel and Mary HUSTON; William and Martha DAVIDSON; William and Elizabeth NICKLE; James and Elsie SAY; John BELL; Robert and Hannah CRISWELL; Robert HEWEY; David and Esther SAY; Nathaniel and Mary McFEETER; Alexander and Jane SULLINGER; Sophia and Jane CAMPBELL; William and Sarah PLATT; Laura DOWNING; Elizabeth and Mary BEELS; Margaret OWEN; Rachel RUMBARGER; Jane GRANT; James and Mary CLARK, Elizabeth McDONALD; Daniel NICKLE; Sophia and Sarah GARDNER; John and Nancy DONALDSON; Jane, Mary, Hannah & Margaret NICKLE; Elizabeth BELL.
  • Mt. Pleasant Church, Church of God - organized at a camp meeting in Rockland in 1888 when first elder Samuel GILGER was ordained.

Early Schools

  • In 1834 a school was organized in a house on the DONALDSON farm. Early instructors were Samuel STROUP and Charles McCLATCHEY.
  • About 1835 the Swamp School/Maple Hollow School began. A teacher associated with this school was Hannah NICKLE.
  • An early school was organized in a building owned by James AGNEW. Mrs. Andrew PORTER was a teacher at this school
