Cherrytree Township was organized in 1817 and occupies a nearly central position on the northern line of Venango County. The first permanent settler of this area was William REYNOLDS who came from England with his family. They were met by land agents of the Holland Company who induced them to make the journey to northwestern PA. The Reynolds family secured a 400 acre tract on Cherry Tree run in 1797. In 1798 James TUTHILL and John STRAWBRIDGE located in this area.The IRWIN, HAMILTON, FARR, PRATHER, ARCHER, TARR, STEWART, MCFADDEN, ALCORN, BREED & GRIFFIN families arrived in this area in the early 1800s.

The first house in the village of Cherry Tree was John ELDER, a blacksmith from Centre County, PA. Isaac NEWTON erected the second house and opened the first store.

In August of 1859, Drake's well was drilled in this township, an event which marked the beginning of a new era in the history of western Pennsylvania. In 1861 the first flowing well was struck on the McElhaney farm.

Early Schools

In the winter of 1807 the first school in the township was taught by William REYNOLDS in a log dwelling house that was previously occupied by James HAMILTON. The first school house was built in 1809 on the PEEBLES farm by Ninian IRWIN who owned the land at that time. The second school house was built at Cherry Tree village with John WARD and A.G. SIVERLY among the first teachers. In 1828 a frame building was erected at Breedtown by Ninian and James IRWIN. Other early teachers were; Elial FARR, James HAMILTON, Richard IRWIN, James SPENCER, Robert ARCHER, John GAYETTY, Alexander HAYS and Hugh HAMILTON.


CHURCHES

  • Cherry Tree Baptist Church - This chuch was constituted on July 8, 1835. A confession of faith was adopted to which the following persons affixed their names: Amos B. HANCOX, Nathan BREED, James FLEMING, John FLEMING, Amos S. HANCOX, Mrs. Mary GREEN, Mrs. Ruth BREED, Mrs. Sarah FLEMING, Mrs. Mary FLEMING, Mrs. Abigail GLEASON, Mrs. Jane JONES and Mrs. Blanch PRICHARD. On July 25, 1835, Benjamin FLEMING was elected deacon and Amos B. HANCOX, clerk. Amos S. HANCOX, George STRAWBRIDGE and George KEES were appointed a building committee for the erection of a church November 26, 1859.

  • Fairview Methodist Episcopal Church - In 1836 a class was formed by Reverends Reuben PECK and Daniel RICHEY with the following members: John, Elizabeth, Mary, Samuel, William, Andrew, Eliza M., and Rebecca ALCORN, with Samuel ALCORN as the leader. The church ediface was built in 1845.

  • Cherry Tree Presbyterian Church - This church was organized February 1, 1837 with the following members: John and Nancy RYND, Samuel IRWIN, Mrs. Jane IRWIN, Mrs. Lydia STEWART, Mrs. Nancy IRWIN, Mrs. Margaret IRWIN, Mrs. Eliza T. IRWIN, Mrs. Sally HAMILTON, Mrs. Eliza IRWIN, Lydia C. STEWART, John IRWIN, Mrs. Ann IRWIN, Isaac ARCHER and Mary PRATHER.

  • Cherry Tree United Brethern Church - Peter Benninghoff built a church edifice for a small society formed in Oakland in 1858, and the first sermon was preached by a clergyman named CADMAN. In 1880-81 the place of worship was changed to Cherry Tree village.
