PLUMER

From "The Historical Album and Daily Program, Venango County Sesquicentennial, 1805 - 1955"

Plumer was established about 1815 when Abraham C. Prather established a tannery in the vicinity of the present Plumer Village and continued in business until late in the 1830s. The rolling countryside was heavily timbered offering desirable hunting and trapping. This fact brought Henry McCalmont to the area, who in 1843 built the first house in the future town, an ample building of planks, which he named Plumer House. Mr. McCalmont was an ardent supporter of Arnold Plumer of Franklin, the representative in Congress from the district which included Venango County in 1837 - 39 and 1841 - 43, and in his honor named the village, Plumer. The first store was founded in 1851. At one time during the oil boom the population in this area was near 8,000 people. It is now a community of pleasant homes and good farms with several small oil leases still producing.
