Dempseytown blacksmith circa 1895

A wagon shop is on the left and David Thomas’ blacksmith shop is on the right in this ca. 1895 photo taken in Dempseytown. Ed Foster, on the far left, was the son of Hiram and Sarah Burley Foster who had come to Venango County in 1847. Rev. John Esch is pictured next, followed by Miles Turner. Miles was the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Turner. Daniel Turner came to Franklin in the early 1800s to assist in quarrying stone for some of the first houses in town. Blacksmiths David Thomas and his son George , holding the horse, are next. The man on the far right is Austin Phillips who was a mail carrier.
