Hawkins, Mrs Elizabeth D. - Oil City Derrick (Oil City, Pennsylvania) > 1908 > December > 21 Funeral of Mrs Hawkins Funeral services in memory of the late Mrs Elizabeth D. HAWKINS of Cleveland O. were conducted at the home of her brother George LEWIS, Bissell avenue at 3:30 o'clock on Sunday afternoon. Rev William A Broadhurst D.D. pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiated. He was assisted by the First Presbyterian church Choir, composed of Mr and Mrs Charles Smith, Miss Mary Bishop and [can't make it out] who sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "Abide With Me" The attendance of friends of the deceased - who was the widow of the late William HAWKINS, a pioneer oil [can't read maybe refiner]and who after the death of her husband in 1872 has been a frequent visitor in Oil City, was notably large. Rev Broadhurst paid a fitting tribute in his sermon to the philanthropy of Mrs Hawkins, than whom no one was more (??) identified with any charitable work for the benefit of the poor and needy. Among those in attendance from out of town were: W. H. HAWKINS [her son], Mrs W.F. (Minnie) WALLIS [her daughter] and Mrs . H.S. PONTING [her sister], Cleveland Ohio, James LEWIS Avon Ohio. and Mrs W. F. GIBBS [sister], Richmond Ind. The body will be taken to Cleveland O. for burial and will leave in a special car attached to the regular Erie train for that place at 8 o clock this morning. The following will act as pall bearers Charles Cooper, J. P. Philps (?), J. H. Caldwell, D. R. Mackenzie, ? H. Carnatan, J. B. Crawford, Thomas Blackwell and ? M. Rand. Hughes, Ellis - Aug. 25, 1887 CP Aug. 25, 1887 P5 c2 - Citizen-Press Aug. 15, 1887 p5 col. 2. Transcribed in entirety from microfilm copy. - The venerable Ellis Hughes died at the residence of his son, John T. Hughes, in McPherson, Kansas, on Aug. 10^th , aged 79 years and six month [sic]. His remains were interred at Salina, Kansas, where his son, S.P. Hughes, resides. He was a brother of James Hughes, Esq., of this city. About a year ago, Mr. Hughes paid a visit to relatives and friends in this city and county, and enjoyed a cordial revival of old acquaintanceships. In a notice of him, this week’s Citizen-Press says: He was of the old settlers in Venango county, where he was born, and was well known to the old residents of the eastern part of the county, as a man of sterling integrity of character and a devoted Christian. Twenty years ago he went to Kansas and has resided there. He was married in 1830 to Amelia Davis, of Rockland, and leaves nine children; seven daughters and two sons, viz: S.P. Hughes, Salina, Kansas; J.F. Hughes, McPherson, Kansas; Mrs. Underwood, Washington Territory; Mrs. Stevens, Colorado; Mrs. Farris and Mrs. Anderson, Ellsworth, W.T., and Mrs. John Huston, of this city.
