    *Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd DANIELS and daughter, of Brockway, visited the former's grandmother, Mrs. Etta LATSHAW, Saturday.
    *Mr. and Mrs. Jack LIPKO spent Sunday with the former's brother who is ill at Youngstown, O.
    *William WOLFORD and grandaughter, Esther WOLFORD, of Lisbon, visited Miss Melda WITHERUP and Mr. and Mrs. H.K. WITHERUP, Sunday.
    *Mr. and Mrs. James BODKIN, of Aliquippa, spent the Easter vacation with Mrs. Bodkin's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest GRIFFIN. Mrs. BODKIN is spending a few days with her parents.
    *Mr. and Mrs. S.B. WITHERUP met their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William WITHERUP, of Meadville, at Franklin, Easter Sunday and wre their guests at dinner. They all vistied Mrs. and Mrs. D.E. WITHERUP and Mr. and Mrs. Frank SCHIFFER and family.
    *Mr. and Mrs. W. E. HUGGLER and two children, Barbara Weaver, of Van; Mrs. Henry TRUMAN and children; Marjelyn Ruth and Henry Jr., were guests of Mr. and Mrs. James BLACK, Easter Sunday.
    *Charles DONOVAN, of Franklin, was a caller at the home of Miss Melda WITHERUP, Tuesday evening.
    *Mr. and Mrs. John CAMPBELL and daughter, Mary Esther, of Franklin, were diner guests of the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.W. CAMPBELL, Easter Sunday. Other visitors at the Campbell home during the day were Mr. and Mrs. Walter WITHERUP and Mr. and Mrs. S. B. WITHERUP.
    *Mr. and Mrs. Roy BAKER, Mrs. L. W. SHOUP and daughter, Mrs. Jack CRAIG, Mrs. and Mrs. H.K. WITHERUP, Mrs. A.J. MORROW and Mrs. S.B. WITHERUP were shoppers at Franklin, Thursday.
    *Miss Florilla CROSS is spending her Easter vacation at Cleveland, O.
    *Mr. and Mrs. Blenton KAGLE, of Knox, and Mr. and Mrs. Joe HEALY and baby spent Sunday with the ladies' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gus SHAFFER.
    *Mr. and Mrs. Lee HETRICK, of Pittsburgh, spent the week-end at their cottage here.
    *Mr. and Mrs. L.P. MOORE and sons, Paul, Kenneth and Glenn, visited Mr. and Mrs. D.E. WITHERUP and Mrs. and Mrs. Frank SCHIFFER at Franklin, Sunday.
    *Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth VAUX and children, of Greensburg, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. L.W. SHOUP Sunday. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. SHOUP Sunday afternoon and motored to St. Petersburg where they visited Mr. Shoup's parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.W. SHOUP.
    *Mr. and Mrs. Arthur MOORE and sons, Richard, DeWayne and Lloyd, visited Mr. and Mrs. Cal DODSON at Annandale, Sunday.
    *Mr. and Mrs. Herbert STEIGHNER, of Butler, visited the former's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. T. W. CAMPBELL.
    *Mrs. C.C. JOHNS, who has been a patient in the Franklin Hospital several days, returned home Saturday.
    *Mr. and Mrs. A.J. MORROW attended the funeral of Burroughs TURNER at the Pleasant View Church Sunday, March 29. Mr. TURNER was a former resident of Rockland for a number of years and both he and Mrs. TURNER were faithful members of the Rockland Methodist Church.
    *Mrs. STRONG, who has spent the winter at Pittsburgh, came to the home of her daughter, Mrs. HEALY where she will spend the summer.
    *Mr. and Mrs. John TARR, of Pittsburgh, spent Sunday at their cottage here.
    *Mr. and Mrs. H.K. WITHERUP visited Mr. and Mrs. L. W. SHOUP, Saturday.
    *Mr. and Mrs. BROAD have sold their farm and moved back to Cleveland.
    *Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert FINDLEY and daughters, Jean and Janice, were guests of the former's father and sister, Frank FINDLEY and Mrs. James WELSH, at Rockland, Thursday, April 2 and helped Mr. FINDLEY celebrate his birthday anniversary.
    *Fred MONTGOMERY, Kenneth TIDBALL, of Franklin, Harold McCLINTOCK, of Kaneville, and Robert WITHERUP, of Franklin, visited the latter's father J. L. WITHERUP Thursday, enroute home from Richmond, Va., where they were employed. They drove to Ft. Bragg, N.C., on Sunday, March 29, and visited Robert's brother, Foster WITHERUP, who is training at that camp.
    *Mr. and Mrs. W. L. SHOUP and Mrs. Alva SALLADE of Oil City, visited Mr. and Mrs. L.W. SHOUP, Sunday evening.
    *Mr. and Mrs. David WITHERUP and son, Eugene, of Franklin, called on Mr. and Mrs. S. B. WITHERUP, Monday evening.
    *While on a business trip to Franklin, Thursday, H. K. WITHERUP lost his pocketbook containing between $15 and $18 in bills, also his license cards and other papers.
    *Mr. and Mrs. Robert WITHERUP, of Franklin, visited J. L. WITHERUP and family, Sunday.
    *The former WRIGHT place here was sold to Vant HENDERSON recently, who moved here from Anniseville.
    *Word was received here by Miss Elsie JACOBS, Monday, that her sister-in-law, Mrs. Lillie JACOBS, died at her home at Bradenton, Fla., on Easter Sunday. Her husband passed away eight years ago on Easter Sunday. Funeral services were held at the Criswell Funeral Home at Emlenton, Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
    *Miss Edith LUTZ and friend, Mr. RICHARDS, of Pittsburgh, were Easter Sunday guests of the former's sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. J. Y. STEWART.
    *Mr. and Mrs. Sam MOCTON, and two children, of Sandy Lake, spent Wednesday evening with Mr. and Mrs. James MOCTON.
    *Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence FOSTER and two children, of Carlton, spent Friday evening in the Walter ROSE home.
    *Mrs. James TENNEY, Sr. of Sandy Lake, called on her father, William GLENN, recently.
    *Elton VOGAN has rented Sarah ADAMS' farm and moved his family there.
    *Mrs. Nellie MOOK, of Oil City, was a recent guest of her mother, Mrs. Mary REAGLE.
    *Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence FOSTER and two children, of Carlton, spent Saturday eveing with Mr. and Mrs. James MORTON.
    *We are glad to report Hugh SMITH much improved.

    *Mrs. Harry DAWE, a patient in Polk State School Hospital is reported as slowly improving.
    *James WESTON was removed to the Franklin Hospital today.
    *Martha McCLELLAND, of Mercer County Hospital, spent Easter with Polk relatives.
    *Pvt. John E. MARSHALL is well and has been removed to Camp Shelby, Miss. His new address is Battery C, 35th F.A.C. Shelby.
    *Mrs. Mildred GILLILAND of Polk has received a telegram from her son, Dean D. GILLILAND, who has been in Puerto Rico for the past 15 months. The message came from Montgomery, Ala. He has been transferred to Maxwell Field to attend flying school.
    *Pvt. Stewart PERRINE, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Carl PERRINE, of Sugar Grove, Pa, former residents here, has been calling on friends in the community. He is also stationed at Maxwell flying field and is in line for advanced instruction as a flying cadet.
    *Charles WORRELL, son of Dr. Edith WORRELL, Technical Sgt., has been named master sergeant of the 5th Material Squadron at Langley Field.
    *Mrs. R. D. SHEPHARD and Mrs. Jack CARTER returned from California on Monday morning, after a two weeks visit with the former's son, Pvt. Charles SHEPHARD, who is stationed at Oakland, Cal. Charles has been promoted and is now in charge of a mechanical repair squad.
    *Norman STRIGHT and sons, Merle and Leland and their families spent Easter with Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence STRIGHT, of Meadville.
    *The Rev. and Mrs. W.S. INGERSOLL are enjoying a few days vacation this week.
    *Charles KILGORE has recently returned from spending the winter in Florida.
    *E.W. WILKINSON, Charles KILGORE, Mrs. Pedro McKISSICK, Miss Ethel PERRINE, Miss Caroline McCLELLAND and Laura M. JEWELL attended Robert PERRINE'S funeral at Franklin, Monday afternoon.
    *The Glenn HAMMERLEE family visited the J. W. SHAWKEY family at New Castle, Tuesday.
    *William Otto GOETZ, Jr. of Oil City, and Marion Jane ELY, of Polk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. ELY, were married Saturday morning in Franklin at the residence of the Rev. Dr. B.B. ROYER, who officiated.

    *Melvin ADAMS, of Fort Knox, Ken., was home on a few days furlough visiting his mother, sister and other relatives of this vicinity.
    *Mrs. Dave SHIELDS and daughter, Lulu, called on Mr. and Mrs. JEWELLl and Mr. and Mrs. Walter JEWELL last Sunday.

  • October 6, 1942
    * Major George R. BOOKWALTER was here from Pittsburgh on Monday for a short visit.
    * Miss Lois Mae WASSON and Miss Virginia McLAIN, of Cleveland, both students at Grove City College, spent the week - end with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry V. WASSON, Pittsburgh Road.
    * Mrs. F. V. LICHTENFELS, of Pitcairn, who is on her way home from Bobcaygeon, Ontario, Canada, where she has spent the summer, is visiting at the home of her father, A. S. KARNS. Dr. Lichtenfels will join his wife later.
    * Mr. and Mrs. V. E. YARD have returned from Baltimore, Md., where they visited the latter's mother, Mrs. F. G. ROEMER, a patient in the Maryland General Hospital. Mrs. yard's sister, Mrs. George W. SIEFER, Jr., remained for a longer stay with her mother, whose condition is reported as improved.
    * A party of 41 friends and relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard YOUNG, on Oak Hill, to honor Pvt. John A. WENTWORTH, who is with Company R, First Parachute Training Regiment, Fort Benning, Ga. Games were played and prizes won by Mrs. Leona LAWSON and Miss Kathryn BOUGHNER. The centerpiece of the table from which refreshments were served consisted of three cakes decorated with small flags with a large central flag from which streamers of red, white and blue extended to the corners of the table. Mrs. Arthur WENTWORTH, Mrs. Ormond WENTWORTH and Mrs. YOUNG were the hostesses. The guests presented the young soldier with nice gifts and extended best wishes to him in his neew venture of parachute jumping.
    * Mrs. and Mrs. Willis KREPP, 604 Buffalo Street, entertained 15 guests and relatives Sunday in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson WALTERS on their 30th wedding anniversary. There were friends and relatives present from Titusville, Pleasantville, and Grand Valley. The color scheme was pink and white and the wedding cake was decorated with pink roses and pink candles in candlesticks. Mr. and Mrs. WALTERS received many beautiful gifts and numerous cards of congratulations.
    * Mrs. Ronald REAGLE entertained 10 boys and girls from 2 to 4 Monday afternoon at her home on Ninth Street in honor of her daugter, Meredith Alice, who was two years of age on Sunday. Refreshments were served and the little tot received nice gifts.
    * The members of the La Cartes Club were entertained by Miss Viola RAMSDALE, with Mrs. Louise REYNOLDS and Miss Jean DAVIS, guests of the club, winning the "500" prizes. Mrs. Clarence SWATSLER was also a guest. The hostess served a delicious lunch.
    * Miss Esther DICK, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold G. DICK, of 314 Fourteenth Street, formerly of 520 Rocky Grove Avenue, will be graduated tonight from the nursing school of Buhl Hospital in Sharon. A number of relatives and friends plan to attend the exercises. Miss DICK is a graduate of Rocky Grove High School.
    *D.A.R. Opens Year With Program Tea

      The Venango Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution opened the season Monday afternoon in the Franklin Library.
      The D.A.R. is taking up the study of Pennsylvania history and a paper on "William Penn" was presented by Mrs. R.L. SATTERWHITE, Jr.

    * Mr. and Mrs. A. S. LIEB, of Philadelphia, were week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Earle N. VOGAN, Colbert Ave.
    * Sabina CLIFFORD, d/o Mr. and Mrs. J. M. CLIFFORD of Linden Ave. became the bride today of John RUSSELL, son of Mrs. George H. TORREY, of West Third St. at the rectory of St. Joseph's Church, Oil City. Mrs. Jack McGREEVY, of Buffalo, was the bride's matron of honor and James BROOKS of Pittsburgh, was best man.
    * Funeral services for Mrs. Ellen LOANE, widow of Charles E. LOANE, of 710 West First Street, who died Saturday afternoon. Interment was in Grove Hill Cemetery with the following acting as pallbearers: W. M. ROBINSON, Richard LOCKWOOD, John G. PAYNE, Dr. Thomas THOMAS, W. J. THOMAS, Edward McALEVY.
    * The Junior Section of the Belles Lettres Club will meet Thursday night. Mrs. Robert HAUSMAN, President; Miss Helen RICHARDS, First Vice Pres.; Miss Helen LINDQUST, Secretary; Miss Marjorie SIEFER, Treasurer; Miss Betty WEAVER, Federation Secretary.
    * Man is Found Dead in Woods - Harvey Stanton VOGAN, 75, was found dead of a heart attack in the woods near his home in Peaceful Valley, Polk, R. D. 2, early Monday evening. His horse and wagon had returned home without him, and his wife, Mrs. Elsie BUTTERFIELD VOGAN, hurried to the woods to search for him. Mr. Vogan was the son of Harvey and Maria BEATTY Vogan and he was born Dec. 25, 1866.
    * James SMITH, well-known graduate of Franklin High School, played a piano solo, "Autumn," by Shamaniae for the Junior Monday Evening Musical Society.
    * Miss Phyllis CAUVEL, daughter of Mrs. Blanche M. Cauvel and the late C. P. Cauvel, and Homer CARTER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Carter, of Dempseytown, were married Monday evening at Chapmanville by Rev. J. L. MURRAY. The couple was accompanied by the bride's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William E. CAUVEL of Franklin. The bride wore a bracelet and necklace borrowed from her cousin, Miss Beatrice GREENLEE.
    * Mr. and Mrs. Lee W. RICE celebrate golden anniversary. Mr. Rice and Ella Margaret PYLE Rice were married on Sept. 27, 1892. Mrs. Rice is the daughter of Cyrus and Emeline Pyle. Mr. Rice is son of William & Rebecca Rice.

    *W. W. BLEAKLEY has gone to his ranch in Arizona where he will spend some time.
    * Mrs. Roy W. SNYDER and daughter, Mrs. William BUNCE, have gone to Bowman Field, Ky. to visit a son, Pvt. Donald SNYDER.
    * Mrs. John RUSSELL and two children, John Jr., and Michael, of Akron O., are spending the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. MYERS.
    *Miss Nita May MURRIN is spending the week-end at Grove City College, the guest of her former roommate, Miss Georgine ZIEGENFUSS, of Dormont.
    * Clyde L. BRANDON, former Franklin man has returned to Walton, N.Y., after spending several days at the home of his brother, and family, Mr. and Mrs. Lester BRANDON, of Prospect Park.
    * Mr. and Mrs. R. H. PERSONS, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard HORTH and Miss Alice EAKIN returned last evening from attending the convention of the State Sabbath School Association in Uniontown.
    * Mr. and Mrs. Paul WAREHAM and baby, of Bradford, spent from Thursday until Sunday with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin WAREHAM.
    *Worship services at Hebron on Sunday evening, Oct. 11, at 7:30. Hebron Ladies' Aid social day will be on Thursday, Oct. 15, at the home of Mrs. Clair HOVIS. Everyone welcome.
    *A very interesting meeting of the Ladies' Aid Society was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Byron BLAIR on Friday evening. The president, Mrs. Walter CARRELL, presided at the business session. An election of officers was held. Mrs. Walter KING, president; Mrs. T. M. SHORTS, vice president; Mrs. Ruben WELTON, treasurer, and Mrs. Tunis VAN BRUSSELL, secretary. The next meeting will be held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter KING.
    *Mr. and Mrs. Ruphus WIDMYER and family moved to Franklin last week.
    *Miss Louise WHITEMAN'S condition is as good as could be expected. She is a patient in the Mercer Hospital.


  • September 1, 1943
    *Harry HAYLETT, stamp window clerk of the Franklin postoffice, is back on duty after having landed --- and suffering bites from --- a good sized wall-eyed pike.The big fellow, 28 inches long, was landed in Haylett's boat while he was fishing in the Allegheny River at Oleopolis, near his summer cottage. The fish was too big for the landing net, so HAYLETT reached out and grabbed the pike's ire. The fish sank its sharp teeth into his right hand. Then the fish, still floundering, grabbed at Harry's toes, and tore the skin and flesh. However, the pike was duly disposed of. It weighted six and three-fourths pounds.
    *Lieutenant is Promoted to Captain - F. Regis RIESENMAN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph RIESENMAN, Jr., this city, on duty with the United States army medical corps at the McClosky General Hospital, Temple, Tex., has been promoted to captain. He has been serving there in the capacity of neurologist.At the same time announcement was made that Capt. RIESENMAN and Lieut. Victoria A. WISOCKI, of Fort Lewis, Wash., were married. Lieut. WISOCKI was an army nurse with the Pitt unit of Pittsburgh. She was on leave and visiting her husband at Temple, Tex., when word of his promotion came.
