STATE HISTORICAL MARKERS
~ VENANGO COUNTY ~

OLD GARRISON - Erected March 20, 1947. This marker is located at 10th and Liberty Streets in Franklin.

Built in 1796 to replace Fort Franklin. Commanded both French Creek and the Allegheny River. Occupied until 1799 by U. S. troops. Was later the first jail of Venango County. The site at the foot of Tenth Street is now underwater.

Known as the "Old Garrison" this structure was a strong wooden building, a story and a half high. It provided housing for the troops until 1803. The Old Garrison was not mounted with cannon and was never fortified. In 1805, when Venango County was organized for judicial purposes, the Old Garrison became a jail. After its service as a jail, it was converted to a private residence that was later destroyed by high water from the river.
