Notes for MARY ELMARETTA JOHNSTON:

IN MEMORIAM
Elmaretta J. Fleming,
Died December 28th, 1873, in her 29th year.

"Resurgat."

This estimable lady, the elder daughter of Alexander and Adelia Johnston, was born in Canal, on the twenty-ninth of July, 1845. Under the training of godly parents, she early became susceptible to religious influences, finally joining the Wesleyan Church, of which she remained a consistent member to the end of her life. Six years ago she married Ephraim Fleming, who is left with two small children to mourn the loss of his devoted partner. Mrs. Fleming's last illness was uncommonly long and painful, confining her to bed for many months; but her afflictions were borne without a murmur, the gentle sufferer enduring the severest agony with perfect resignation to the Divine will. Surrounded by weeping friends, she peacefully expired at nine o'clock on Sunday Evening, the closing Sabbath of the year. A large concourse of sincere mourners attended the funeral on Tuesday. Service was held in the Wesleyan Church, after which the mortal remains were consigned to the silent tomb. The stricken relatives have the deep sympathy of the community in this bereavement, nor are they left to grieve as those who have no hope. The loved one has left a memory that will long be fragrant, and to the sorrowing hearts of the surviving kindred remains the sweet consolation of of [sic] believing that their loss is her eternal gain. J. J. M.
