EARLY PHYSICIANS AND DENTISTS OF FRANKLIN

In 1800 Venango County was a rugged wilderness with the population being about 1,130. The hearty early settlers were content to live or die by natural law or by concoctions made from barks and roots and minor drugs that could be purchased. By 1820 the population had increased to around 5,000 and doctors arrived in the area to meet the needs of the growing population.

  • In 1910, Dr. E. W. Moore of Franklin presented an outline of the early work of doctors at the meeting of the Venango County Medical Society that was held at Monarch Park. The full text of his outline can be found in the July 19, 1910 edition of the Evening News. The following is an excerpt from this article:

“Doctors in the County in 1867

    From the best sources at hand the following physicians were in the county in 1867 and eligible to membership: Drs. B. Gillett, S. G. Snowden, S. S. Proter, W. S. Welsh, J. R. Arter, T. W. Egbert, A. G. Egbert, F. F. Davis, J. B. Glenn, H. H. Seys, R. Crawford, J. M. Dille, W. L. Whann, F. H. Johnston, D. C. Galbraith, W. C. Tyler, J. M. Follett, L. H. Christie, John Pettit, M. C. Egbert, J. M. Foster, B. F. Hamilton, T. W. Sampson, G. W. Cary, Gillespie, Bishop, W. W. Powell, Davies, Wynn and Shugart.

The first meeting of the Medical Society was held on May 8, 1867 in the Kinnear Hotel and in 1869 the constitution and by-laws were signed.

    EARLY PHYSICIANS

The first to hang out his sign was T. S. SYMONDS (ca. 1795). The next was Thomas SMITH. Dr. George R. ESPY came in 1820 and stayed 11 years. Dr. John WOOD was a popular physician and Drs. FAULKNER, DOWLING and GILFILIAN were well known and Dr. George W. CONNELLY read medicine with Dr. Espy and practiced for several years. Dr. N. D. SNOWDEN began practice here about 1833 and Dr. Buckland GILLETT came in 1834. These last two were identified with the town in a professional capacity for more than a generation. They were alike beloved and trusted. Dr. S. Gustine SNOWDEN who succeeded to his father’s practice and who died in 1884, was one of the ablest physicians and surgeons in this part of the State and in many of the essentials of the profession he was regarded as without a superior.

The practicing physicians of Franklin at present are: Drs. W. L. WHANN, J. R. BORLAND, E. W. MOORE, D. C. GALBRAITH, W. A. NICHOLSON, Stephen BREDIN, J. W. LEADENHAM, J. B. GLENN, T. A. IRWIN, S. G. FOSTER and Dr. WALLACE. The oldest of them in years and practice is Dr. Walter Lowrie Whann.

  • The following information about the early physicians is from History of Venango County, 1890, Chapter XIV, pages 190 – 198.

PETER FAULKNER came to Franklin in 1820, but moved to Woodstock, Crawford County, within a brief period. He was quite successful both as a surgeon and practitioner. He died at Erie, January 13, 1876, in the eighty-sixth year of his age.

GEORGE R. ESPY also located in Franklin in 1820. He was born February 21, 1796. His academic education was obtained at Bedford, Pennsylvania and his professional training was under the tutorship of Doctor Peter Allen of Knisman, Ohio. In 1831 he retired from practice; in the winter of 1845-46 he removed to Fort Madison, Iowa where he was engaged in milling and merchandising until his death, February 21, 1849.

Doctors GILFILLAN, J. DOWLING, JOHN D. WOOD and J. BASCOM located at Franklin in the early years of 1800.

NATHANIEL DUFFIELD SNOWDEN began his professional career in this county in 1828 at Emlenton and later moved to Franklin. He was born at Harrisburg, November 28, 1803, son of Reverend Nathaniel Randolph and Sarah (Gustine) Snowden, the latter a daughter of Doctor Lemuel Gustine, a surgeon in the American army during the Revolution. Doctor Snowden married on the 27th of April, 1833 to Jane McClelland, daughter of George McClelland. Doctor Snowden died September 30, 1864, in the sixty-first year of his age.

BUCKLAND GILLETT was born in Schoharie County, New York, September 18, 1807. His parents were natives of Connecticut, who emigrated to Schoharie County and then to Fredonia, Chautauqua County, New York. In 1829 he began practice at Titusville, Pennsylvania, but in May of 1834 he moved to Franklin where he made his home and continued practice for nearly half a century. On April 30, 1832, he married Sarah Byles, daughter of Ebenezer Byles of Allegheny Township. They had one child, Annette, wife of R. L. Cochran. Dr. Gillett died October 19, 1881.

He was born in Allegheny Township, September 3, 1804, son of Isaac Connely, a pioneer in that part of the county. Dr. Connely was married on September 14, 1826 to Margaret Lowry of Meadville, Crawford Co., Pa. His death occurred January 13, 1851.

SAMUEL GUSTINE SNOWDEN, eldest son of Doctor Nathaniel Duffield Snowden, was born at Franklin, Pennsylvania, December 21, 1837. In October, 1857, he matriculated at the Philadelphia College of Medicine. He graduated March 3, 1859, receiving his diploma soon after his twenty-first birthday. He established himself permanently at Franklin and continued in the active duties of an extensive practice until 1883, when failing health compelled him to relinquish professional work. Dr. Snowden and wife, Mary Judson, moved to Ashville, North Carolina where it was hoped that the mountain air might prove beneficial.
