A BRIEF HISTORY

ROCKLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

ROCKLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, the Presbytery of Allegheny origanized this church body in 1822. The first preacher Reverend Robert McGarrugh held services in a log house and a tent, located on the Bickle farm, on land donated by James Morrow. Later the church relocated to lot donated by Joshua Davis in the village of Freedom (Pittsville).

The following men served as Pastors:
  • Rev. Robert McGarrah,1822-1830-31
  • Rev. John Glenn, 1831-1845
  • Rev. William McMichael, 1846-1858
  • Rev. Samuel Kincaid
  • Rev. M.M. Shirey
  • Rev. Andrew Virtue
  • Rev. J.C. Hench
  • Rev. S.P Dillon
  • Rev. A.S. Elliott

The following men served as Elders at one time or another:
  • James Hall,
  • William McClatchey
  • Matthew McDowell
  • Stephen Arnold
  • John S. McKean
  • William Donaldson
  • Andrew Bell
  • Thomas Jolly
  • Robert Porter
  • Christopher Cox
  • J.W. Glenn
  • James Jolly

The early congrgation was made up of members of these families:

all early settlers in Rockland Township.

The church closed and it's building was sold sometime in the 1960's. Partial records are held at the Venango County Historical Society, Franklin, Pennsylvania.
