of Academia Presbyterian Church

Academia Presbyterian Church - Nickleville Presbyterian Church

ACADEMIA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH-Richland church, organized in 1823, included thePresbyterian element that formed this body prior to it's organization, which occurred August 2,1856.
with the following members:
  • Samuel and Mary Huston,
  • William and Martha Davidson,
  • William and Elizabeth Nickle,
  • James and Elsie Say, John Bell,
  • Robert and Hannah Criswell,
  • Robert Huey,
  • David and Esther Say,
  • Nathaniel and Mary McFeeter,
  • Alexander and Jane Sullinger,
  • Sophia and Jane Campbell,
  • William and Sarah Platt,
  • Laura Downing,
  • Elizabeth Beels,
  • Mary Beels,
  • Margaret Owen,
  • Rachel Rumbarger,
  • Jane Grant,
  • James and Mary Clark,
  • Elizabeth McDonald,
  • Daniel Nickle,
  • Sophia and Sarah Gardner,
  • Elizabeth Bell, Jr.
The first elders were
  • Samuel Huston
  • William Davidson.

Years before this Reverend Robert McGarrugh fromLawrenceburg, Clarion county, had preached in this vicinity, in the barn of George Gardner, theschool house, and elsewhere.
The succession of regular pastors has been as follows:
  • William McMichaels,
  • S.P. Kincaid, M.M. Shirey,
  • Andrew Virtue,
  • J.C. Hench,
  • S.P. Dillon,
  • A.S. Elliott
The church edifice at Nickleville was built in 1850.
The building committee consisted of
  • T.K. Gardner,
  • Alexander Sullinger,
  • Robert Criswell.

Note: Academia Presbuterian Church changed it's name to the Nickleville Presbyterian Church in 1909.

A BRIEF HISTORY

of Mt. Pleasant Church of God

MT. PLESANT CHURCH OF GOD,was organized August 23, 1888, at a camp meeting inRockland, when the first elder, Samuel Gilger was ordained. A church building erected in 1856 bythe Methodists, was purchased in 1888.
